A rare disease is a health condition that affects a small number of people. In Europe, a condition is rare if it affects fewer than 50 in 100,000 people. There are over 7,000 distinct rare diseases, and about 80% of them have a genetic cause, often appearing early in childhood. Rare Disease Day is held on the last day of February to raise awareness for rare diseases. There are a number of non-profit and charitable organisations which push for further awareness, interest, and engagement in the subject of rare diseases, including EURORDIS, Genetic Alliance UK, the Rare Revolution Magazine.
