Congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI) is a rare, serious genetic condition in newborns and children where the pancreas makes too much insulin. This excess insulin causes severe low blood sugar, which is dangerous and needs fast medical care to stop brain damage or seizures. Because CHI is not covered by routine newborn screening panels and lacks a simple biomarker, early detection of the disease depends entirely on recognizing clinical warning signs and advocating for immediate blood glucose testing. Early detection saves lives and can prevent serious complications.
A rare disease is a health condition that affects a small number of people. In Europe, a condition is rare if it affects fewer than 50 in 100,000 people. There are over 7,000 distinct rare diseases, and about 80% of them have a genetic cause, often appearing early in childhood. My son was born with CHI, and diagnosed at 3 months old. We know of only one other person with his exact genetic mutation, but we've been lucky to meet dozens of CHI families and learn more about it through a fantastic global organization named Congenital Hyperinsulinism International.
